Hi friends! When I first started asking my husband to take photos it was quite the ordeal. I’ll compare it to putting together IKEA furniture. Let’s just say we learned a lot about each other and now he rocks it with my phone and camera! I thought I would share with you 5 simple tips on how to get your husband to take great photos for you. I can honestly say they’re a game changer!
1. KEEP SNAPPING
I can’t say this enough. When my husband first started taking photos he thought after one or two shots he was done . He finally got the hint after I kept telling him to keep snapping, that the more pictures he takes the better. There’s going to be one great photo among all of them!
2. GET ALL OF ME IN THE FRAME
Everything from the head right down to the shoes needs to be in the shot. You can crop later but nothing’s worse than a great photo being cut off at the ankle or half your head is missing. Directing him to get it all in the frame allows you the opportunity to play and crop away later.
3. DON’T FORGET ABOUT THE HAIR AND CHIN
Hair. Is. Everything. I’m always asking my husband if my hair is ok. Have you ever taken a great photo only to have a crazy hair flyaway that you can’t stop looking at? Get your husband to make sure all is smooth in the hair department and you won’t have to worry after the fact. In addition to hair I’m always worried about my double chin making it’s appearance. The hubby will often tell me, “Chin up” in other words an extra chin has shown up to the shoot.
4. HAVE SOME INSPIRATION PHOTOS READY
Pinterest is a great place to get inspiration photos to help pass your vision on to your husband. Guys are visual and showing them what you have in mind will go a long way!
5. MAKE SURE THERE’S NOTHING IN THE BACKGOUND
It’s always a great idea to get your husband in the habit of checking the entire frame of the shot, this includes the background. You want to make sure there’s nothing in the shot that shouldn’t be there. For us moms that could mean a pile of laundry, toys, you name it. Have him check to make sure you’re the main focus.
If the kids are with you have your husband hold a favourite toy or stuffy near the camera as he’s taking the shot . They will be distracted and it always guarantees a smile or two. In the photo above my husband is holding Foxy, my sons favourite little friend. It works like a charm.
Hope this helped a little! Feel free to share it with your husband and I guarantee the next time you ask him to snap a few photos you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
If you have a favourite tip that you would love to share leave me a comment!
Sincerely, Nikki xo
