Do you ever struggle with what to wear to your family photo session? Trying to decide what to wear is the number one struggle I often hear from my friends and clients. It can seem overwhelming but it doesn’t need to be! Below are my top 5 tips to help you choose the perfect outfit for you and your family.
- PLAN YOUR OUTFIT AHEAD OF TIME
A week before your session, start going through your options. The last thing you want to be doing (and I’ve done it more than once!) is running out the night before trying to find the perfect outfit. Don’t forget about your shoes, too!
- COORDINATE YOUR OUTFIT
Coordinate isn’t the same thing as matching. Choose a colour scheme and find pieces that compliment each other. I suggest choosing no more than three colours for your family portrait, ones with similar tones that go nicely together. Try and stay away from everyone wearing the same colour. You’ll disappear in the photos and we don’t want that!
- THINK ABOUT HOW THEY WILL BE DISPLAYED
This is something people don’t often think about. If you’re hoping to frame the photos and display them in your house, think about your home decor. If your house is light and bright with whites and neutrals, think about the type of pictures you want hanging on the walls. Use those colours to your advantage and plan your outfits with those colour schemes in mind. When in doubt, you can never go wrong with timeless and classic.
- LEAVE THE GRAPHICS AT HOME
Your family photos is an opportunity to focus on you and your family, not the distracting graphics, cartoon characters or logos on your clothes. Leave these at home and choose clothes that will compliment rather than compete.
- THINK ABOUT YOUR LOCATION
Is it an outdoor session? If you’re having your photos done at a park surrounded by beautiful greenery I would stay away from greens or colours that may have you disappearing into the surroundings. Instead, choose colours that enable you to stand out and shine in your picturesBONUS TIP! – Wash your hair the day before your photo shoot. When your hair is too clean, it can be static-y. ‘Second-day’ hair tends to be a little shinier and has fewer flyaways. Who doesn’t want great looking hair in their photos!
That’s it! Those are my top 5 easy tips for what to wear for your next family photo session! I hope you found these tips to be useful! Leave me a comment with your favourite tip from above. Enjoy your photo session!
